Martha vs Mary

LUKE 10: 38-42

Martha was busy doing worldly things. When I say worldly, I mean the menial, everyday crap that is part of living in a physical world. Martha placed great importance on these things. I know people who do this same thing. They are caught up in the cleaning of the house, the cooking of the food, the washing and ironing of clothes. But these things are transient, as are all things physical.

Jesus preferred the actions Mary, who sat at his feet and listened to his words nourishing her spirit. He said Mary was deriving something that would never leave her - she was focused on her eternal soul and not on something that would not last, the transient everyday crap.

It is easier for us to focus on the day to day things. These are things we can handle, we can "get our arms around" this stuff. The material, concrete items of our ratty lives, things we can see and touch. Its harder, sometimes overwhelming, to contemplate eternity, the infinite; much easier to wash that dish. We must avoid that temptation and look within. We must be concerned with the part of us that is infinite. The dishes will always be there, there will always be time to do the dishes. And if there isn't time to do them, it must be time to die into eternal life. It's win-win!

My point is you have to decide what is important, and that is always what lies within. That is the most important.
